Artist connection
How do artists connect to the idea of "place"? Color palette, mark-making techniques, and point of view help us understand each of these places as we feel the tension of the storm rising, the stillness of the mountain, the motion sending us spiraling under the bridge, and the contemplation of the wanderer on the hilltop.
how does music connect us to and help us envision a place?
In this introduction activity to places and landscapes, students listened to excerpts from Italian composer Ottorino Respighi's Pines of Rome. As they listened, they drew places they envisioned for each movement. The only information they were given was that each piece was written to take place in a different time of day.
